To help reinforce and promote equality of opportunity and diversity, a series of postcards and posters were produced by the college using images of learners and staff. Each postcard and poster conveys a different message that celebrates diversity. The posters and postcards are displayed prominently and help motivate and encourage learners and staff.
The way in which equality of opportunity and diversity are promoted at the college could be adapted by any provider. The key elements are to:
Other colleges, learndirect centres, and work-based learning, Jobcentre Plus and adult and community learning providers can replicate what the college has done, framing the posters and using the postcards as a communication tool. The messages can be similar to those used by the college or could be adapted to reflect the particular type of provision. For example, in prison education, images could be used with motivational messages about success in gaining qualifications and jobs, or improving literacy and numeracy skills. " I couldn't write to my kids before I came in here - I can now"
To help promote and celebrate diversity, the equality and widening participation manager of the College of North West London has devised a series of postcards and posters.
Each postcard and poster uses photographs of teaching staff, support staff and learners to convey an important message about celebrating diversity and equality of opportunity. The nine postcards cover three main topics:
The postcards and posters were designed by learners on media and graphic design courses. They are printed on good quality card and paper using bold, eye-catching colours. They help raise learners' aspirations, motivating learners and staff and encouraging them to pursue their goals.
The postcards and posters are displayed prominently throughout the college. The postcards are used by the college to send out interview dates and for other appropriate correspondence. Each card carries a message and a few inspirational lines from Nelson Mandela.
Learners like the posters. Quotes include:

Key questions
5. How effective are leadership and management in raising achievement and supporting all learners?
The College of North West London is a large general further education college, situated in the London Borough of Brent, with three main centres at Kilburn, Willesden and Wembley. The college offers programmes in all areas of learning apart from land-based, at entry level to level 4. It provides learning in the community and a small number of work-based learning and Jobcentre Plus programmes.
During 2001-02 the college had 2192 learners aged 16 to 18, of whom 53 per cent were on full-time courses; and 14,208 adult learners, of whom 74 per cent were on part-time courses. Just over half the learners were women and 68 per cent were from minority ethnic groups. Around two-thirds of the college's learners are from areas of high deprivation.
