LSIS turns to sector for network of support for literacy, language and numeracy
For the first time and in a ground-breaking partnership, we are delivering the Support for Literacy, Language and Numeracy (LLN) programme through high- performing providers in the nine English regions. This marks a departure from previous Skills for Life programmes, where the majority of support has been provided by independent consultants or advisers.
Our aim now is to use the expertise that exists in the sector to drive the improvement agenda forward and to return as much money as possible to the front line. It is now a condition of all our contracts that at least 60 per cent of the contract value is spent with providers to release their staff to share ideas and best practice.
We launched the new LLN programme in June this year. Contractors appointed to manage the regional programmes have now recruited networks of around eight providers in each of the nine regions. These providers all meet a set of criteria, including good or excellent inspection grades for capacity to improve, leadership and management, and preparation for life and work. They work across a range of contexts and settings with proven expertise in managing and delivering high-quality literacy language and numeracy provision. Their role will be to work with providers who are performing less well, to identify priority areas for development against a number of themes, including whole organisation approaches, numeracy and employability. Support will be customised to organisational priorities and staff at all levels within the organisation will have the opportunity to engage with the programme.
There is an obvious enthusiasm and confidence for this new approach and sharing expertise with others. I congratulate everyone for adapting and embracing the new arrangements so positively – together we can make a real difference.
